Recertification - Keep the Commitment

Don’t let these tough economic times stop you from earning recertification credit for your HR certification. There are hundreds of activities that will count for recertification credit that are FREE or have little cost. The HR Certification Institute has created a list of recertification activities that will either cost you little to no money to participate in.

For example, many organizations such as SHRM or HR.com offer webcasts at no cost which you can watch right from your PC.  You can also earn recertification credit for first time on-the-job activities that you are engaged in or for a leadership role that you may currently hold that is HR related.

To learn more about recertification activities that are affordable and accessible to you, download our “Tips For Earning Credit Hours” flier.

The HR Certification Institute has a directory with a great number of pre-approved programs that count for recertification credit. Search for activities that fit your schedule and needs.

Quick and easy way to find recertification activities that fit your schedule/needs.
Check out the Online Searchable Directory of Approved Events on the HR Certification Institute’s web site.Certification Tools

This directory has thousand of HR activities that have been pre-approved for recertification by the HR Certification Institute. No matter where you are in your certification cycle, you can use this tool to search for activities that fit your specific needs as an HR professional.

Search the directory by the criteria that are most important to you:

*Type of credit you need to earn (general, strategic, international or California)
*Type of activity you want to attend (college course, seminar, workshop, podcast/webcast or other)
*Dates and location you need
*You may even select to search for “online activities” only

Results will include a list of activities, with information on the above attributes as well as the name of each event listed and the number of credit hours the event has been approved for.

Certification is a great tool for HR practitioners to have as part of their professional portfolio in these tough economic times. The HR Certification Institute is now accepting applications for the May-June 2009 testing window for the PHR, SPHR, GPHR and California certification exams. Encourage the SHRM members in your community to become certified: It will give them the competitive advantage they need to succeed.

To help your members decide which exam is best for them, we recommend reviewing the Certification Handbook, which outlines the profile of an ideal candidate for the PHR, SPHR or GPHR credentials. To help identify the areas in which candidates should concentrate their studies, the HR Certification Institute also recommends the following tools:

·        Taking our “Test Your Knowledge” quizzes is the first step for those contemplating HR certification. For each of our four exams, we offer five multiple-choice questions following the same procedures used to write the actual exam questions. Those taking these quizzes, which are offered free of charge, will not only be given the correct answer for each question, they will also receive the rationale for determining the correct answer. The quizzes are a great way to “test out” the type of questions applicants are likely to encounter on the PHR, SPHR, GPHR or California certification exams.

·        The next step on the road to certification is the HR Certification Institute’s online assessment exams. We often hear from those who took the exam that the tools they used to study didn’t prepare them for the style of questions that are on the actual exams. The assessment exams are the only tools that use actual retired questions from the PHR and SPHR exams. These assessment exams are designed to help applicants identify the areas in which to concentrate their studies. The cost for taking one of our online assessment exams is $45, and a discount is available for those purchasing a bundled package. A GPHR assessment exam is planned for the end of 2009.

·        Finally, the HR Certification Institute offers the PHR and SPHR Certification Guide as well as the GPHR Certification Guide, both available through the SHRMStore. Both guides offer tips on the certification process, information on how the exams are created, the body of knowledge on which the exams are based and sample questions with rationales for the correct answer.

The HR Certification Institute recommends that you use these tools to complement other preparation activities such as self-study and classroom courses, and study groups that your chapter may offer or promote.
