Labor and Employment Law 2018 - A Year in Review

Interactive update on legislation and significant rulings and decisions on the federal and Florida state level.  The audience will get an opportunity to participate in answering questions posed by the speakers that are hot topics on the federal level by using anonymous electronic polling technology.  In addition, the audience will have an opportunity to analyze and discuss the pros and cons of proposed legislation in their state, both from a human resources and legal perspective.   

Three learning objectives:

  • At the conclusion of this presentation, participants will understand and be able to speak about legislative updates on the federal and state levels.
  • Identify and analyze legislative updates on federal and state levels.
  • Thorough understanding of legislative updates and the impact of this legislation on the human resources community.


Amanda Simpson is an Associate in the Orlando, Florida, office of Jackson Lewis P.C.Ms. Simpson is part of the firm’s class action practice group. Since joining Jackson Lewis P.C., Ms. Simpson has handled a number of class and collective actions including wage and hour claims alleging claims of misclassification and off the clock work. Ms. Simpson has also worked with clients on Department of Labor audits as well as voluntary self-audits as to exemption status of hundreds of positions.

She devotes the majority of her practice to counseling and defending employers regarding employment-related matters.Ms. Simpson’s primary practice includes representing clients on a broad array of employment litigation, including wage and hour disputes, claims of discrimination based on disability, race, age, national origin, sex, retaliation, sexual harassment, wrongful discharge, and breach of contract actions.

Prior to joining Jackson Lewis, Ms. Simpson practiced commercial litigation in Orlando and South Florida in federal, state, and appellate courts covering a vast number of practice areas, including employment litigation. Ms. Simpson has successful trial experience both in the state and federal court levels and argued in front of the District Court of Appeals.


Nicole Santamaria is an Associate in the Tampa, Florida, office of Jackson Lewis P.C. Her practice focuses on representing employers in workplace law matters, including preventive advice and counseling.

Ms. Santamaria defends management in matters related to employment discrimination, harassment and retaliation, wage and hour compliance, non-compete issues, whistleblower actions, the Americans with Disabilities Act, and the Family Medical Leave Act. Ms. Santamaria represents clients in federal and state courts, and before local, state, and federal government agencies, including the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

While attending law school, Ms. Santamaria served as an Articles & Symposia Editor for the Stetson Law Review and as a member of the Moot Court Board. Ms. Santamaria competed in the 2015 E. Earle Zehmer Workers’ Compensation National Moot Court Competition, where her team won the Best Brief Award and Ms. Santamaria won the National Association of Workers’ Compensation Judiciary Best Professional Advocate Award. Ms. Santamaria also competed in the Phillip C. Jessup International Moot Court Competition, where she won 7th Best Oralist in the Southern Regional. Prior to joining the firm, Ms. Santamaria served as a federal judicial intern for the Honorable Anthony E. Porcelli of the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida.
